5 Tips that help with ADHD issues

– By Dr. Philip Lee, Burlington N.D., BSc.

Is your child struggling with attention issues and some form of hyperactivity? With proper help in finding and addressing the root cause of the problem, we can gradually help to lessen the symptoms.

As a Naturopathic Doctor, the goal is to support the body’s needs and enable the child’s learning capability for them to reach their greatest potential.

Tip #1 : Get Heavy Metal and Mineral Testing

One of the possible reasons for a child to exhibit learning difficulties is heavy metal toxicity from lead and mercury. Heavy metal can be tested in Naturopathic offices through a urine or hair test. It’s a simple test that all kids with learning difficulty should get done.

Tip #2 : Treating the Deficiencies

Treating the obvious deficiencies will help to improve the child’s mood and focus capabilities. Some crucial tests that may be beneficial are Vitamin B12, Iron (Ferritin), Zinc and Vitamin D. If the values are low, the child should be given the appropriate supplements.

Tip #3 : Support the Liver

Research indicates that children exposed to organophosphate pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can show symptoms consistent with pervasive developmental disorder, ADHD or attention problems. We need to support their liver to function optimally for detoxing.  Multi B-vitamins, particularly Vitamin B12, is very important for detoxification.  Parents can reduce other chemical loads by not consuming foods with colouring and pesticides.

Tip #4 : Heavy Metal Detox

Parents need to work with Naturopathic Doctors to reduce their child’s heavy metal load if deemed high. Avoiding more mercury exposure from different foods, particularly tuna, mackerel, sable fish, grouper, tile fish, and Chilean bass. Children should never get silver fillings (amalgams) from the dentist as they contain high amount of mercury. To reduce lead intake, drinking water should be filtered.

Tip #5 : Protect the Brain

Nutritionally, there are a lot of things parents can do to support their child’s brain function. My favourite brain food is cod liver oil in liquid form as it is high in Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which is crucial for brain growth and focus. For maintaining good concentration at school, kids should have sufficient amount of protein at breakfast and lunch.•
