Ingredients for filling:
  • 6 cups peeled and diced (quite small) apples (we like the tartness of Granny Smith with Gala or Red apples... a combo always makes for a better crumble!)
  • juice of 1/2 a lime or lemon
  • 2 Tbsp. cornstarch or arrowroot powder
  • 1-1/2 Tbsp. ground cinnamon
  • a tiny pinch of nutmeg
Ingredients for crumble:
  • 3/4 Cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1/4 Cup whole wheat flour (or gluten free flour)
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 2 Tbsp. maple syrup (none of that 'fake' stuff!)
  • 1-1/2 Tbsp. unsalted butter, melted
Here's how:
Preheat oven to 350°F and coat your pan all around with a bit of butter.
Prepare the crumble mixture by combining all those ingredients in a bowl, and adding melted butter - as shown on left photo.
In a separate bowl, combine all the filling ingredients and allow to sit for a few minutes.
Transfer the filling to the baking pan and gently press down with your fingers. Then sprinkle evenly with your crumble mixture.
Bake for about 50-60 minutes or until the apples are fork tender. Cool completely then refrigerate for about an hour so the juices can completely thicken.
