As your prepare for your Halloween party treats, DON'T EAT WITH YOUR EYES!
These store-available cupcakes are just an example of some of the POISON that can be sold at some supermarkets. They may be peanut-free, but they're filled with unhealthy and unnecessary ingredients nobody needs – especially not your growing and developing kids!
(Why do we say so openly say "poison"? Poison is defined as "substances which cause disturbances to organisms." Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out...)
Don't believe us? Let's take a closer look and dissect the ingredients list:
Sugar (It's the first ingredient, so you know there's more sugar in there than any other ingredient). Of course, sugar has been known to cause a whole slew of digestive, reproductive, growth-stunting effects on the body.
Enrichedwheatflour (why cant' they just use wholel wheat flour?? Enriched flour is not only devoid of nutrients but it's also bleached)
Vegetableoilshortening (made by mixing modified palm, palm kernel, palm, soybean). Palm oil in its purest form is a source of valuable nutrients. However this "modified" version is high in saturated fats. In a recent study (Journal of Nutrition) there is a link between the consumption of palm oil and an increased risk of heart attacks... Current recomendations to reduce saturated fat intake have led to listing palm oil among the foods to avoid.
SoybeanandCanolaoil - as if one oil wasn't enough, let's throw in a couple more variations!
Cocoa (because they are supposed to be chocolate after all...)
Driedwholeegg (if you were making these at home and they were fresh eggs, you'd have to refrigerate the cupcakes after, right?)
modifiedcornstarch (which means MSG has been added during processing)
skimmilkpowder (because it's cheaper than adding regular whole milk)
bakingpowder (and probably the kind that DOES contain aluminum)
cornsyrup (because a little more thick, sugar is needed, right?)
dextrose (more sugar)
wheypowder (it's really not needed, why add it?)
salt (unavoidable, it's everywhere!)
potassiumsorbate (because more salt will... make it taste better??)
cornsyrupsolids (because corn syrup just wasn't enough!)
soylecithin (it's an emulsifier, which means it'll help oil and water mix together, plus it helps extend shelf life - how handy!)
monoanddiglycerides (again, another emulsifier, usually made of several animal-based products. This means these cupcakes are not vegan... how lucky for vegans!)
guargum (thickener, also used as a laxative for IBS and Crohn's disease patients. After all, how would you expect to digest all these ingredients without help?)
polyglycerol esthers of fatty acids (yet another emulsifier, which also reduces the viscosity of chocolates). Don't we all have this ingredient in our pantries? Yum.
Natural and artificial flavours (because that tiny bit of Cocoa would probably be lost among all these other ingredients, so a little extra help is needed for this ball of goo to taste like... something).
Calcium sulphate (a common industrial chemical - used to help coagulate mixtures).
Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose (sounds delicious, doesn't it?) It's used as a thickener and it's added so the manufacturer can fine-tune the feel of the food in the mouth as it is swallowed. (Like we need help with that?)
Polysorbate 60: Another emulsifier, thickener, stabilizer, so foods won't taste 'greasy'. Generally considered a "safe" chemical (wait... chemical??) but noted as commonly contaminated with other toxic chemicals that are cancer causing.
Glycerin: Used as a sweetener, food additive, thickener, humectant (wetting agent); heck, this little guy does a lot so why don't we just throw him in there??
Sodium Stearoyl-2-Lactylate: Another chemical additive that acts as an emulsifier, foam stabilizer, dough strengthener, fat replacer, sugar replacer, shelf life enhancer, but no... it's not reported to be toxic! (that last bit was sarcastic)
Gum Arabic (any guesses? YES! it's another emulsifier! Plus thickening agent and flavour stabilizer. Because 5 other chemical just weren't enough.)
