Essential Oils are a healthy way of beating and preventing colds and flu
With cooler weather settling in, the common cold and viral flus become even more prevalent. According to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Wellness, over 200 viruses have been identified to be associated with the common cold. Did you know that Essential oils can assist in the prevention of contracting the dreaded viruses that cause colds? I didn’t up until a year ago – and I wish I did.
Essential oils are loaded with anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic properties, and more! Medicine is made from plants which are synthesized. Essential oils however, are pure and natural. They are truly a gift from the earth. Our bodies function better on more natural products like oils, plus you won’t experience the side effects that you could with conventional medicines.
So before you instinctively reach for the synthetic alternative, stop! There are many natural approaches that you can try first. Learn from me.
My oldest son Jake has been prone to bronchitis since birth and was on his first round of antibiotics at 4 months. Since then, each winter he has had to go on antibiotics at least 2-3 times, that is, until we started using pure essential oils.
Last winter, we used oils alone. Now, I feel empowered. I now have the knowledge and the tools in my home to address this and many other health issues that come up.
So please read on to learn more…
Essential oils such as Cinnamon, Clove, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemon, Wild Orange and Thyme all deter the growth of viruses and make them excellent options to use during the colder months when we tend to spend less time in the sun and more time indoors.
Essential oils are very versatile and can be used in a variety of ways to cleanse and purify the air, to boost immunity, to manage stress levels and even to elevate your mood!
The following are some of my favorites:
On Guard: One of our tried and true formulas at home for prevention is the On Guard blend consisting of Clove Bud, Wild Orange, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary bud/leaf. Every September, we begin diffusing this blend in a diffuser to purify the air, and we apply a drop to the bottom of our feet where the pores are larger and more quickly absorbed. For children, simply dilute the oils in fractionated coconut oil, because 1 drop of a good quality oil is very pure and powerful!
Easy Air: For chest and nasal congestion, our favourite solution is a blend called Easy Air. This blend combines Laurel Leaf, Eucalyptus Leaf, Peppermint Plant, Melaleuca Leaf, Lemon Peel, Ravensara Leaf, and Cardamom Seed. We diffuse it, rub it on the kid’s chests at night for relief or put a little on the sinus area to relieve congestion.
Peppermint Oil: This is the most popular oil. It’s a cooling oil that’s effective for releasing tension and elevating energy. Peppermint therefore works really well for relieving headaches and fevers.
You can also make your own blends for a variety of health conditions.

Essential oils have so many therapeutic qualities that are worth exploring. Do your research because the oils you buy off the shelf, even at the health food store, are not regulated. Even if it says ‘pure organic peppermint oil’ it doesn’t mean you are getting the real deal. There may only be one drop of pure organic peppermint oil in that bottle.
Consider adding Essential oils to your natural home wellness kit so that your family is naturally prepared for whatever life may throw your way!•
